Reliance Tipple
To see remnants of Rock Springs’ and Sweetwater County’s early coal-mining era, visit the Reliance Tipple, in Reliance, Wyo. A tipple was a sorting mechanism used to separate and load different grades of coal into trains for transport and sale. The Sweetwater County Historical Museum has maintained this piece of historic equipment, with a handicapped-accessible walking path and interpretative signs. Tours may be arranged by contacting the museum at (307) 872-6435 or swchm@sweetwater.net. From the intersection of Elk Street and Interstate 80 on the north side or Rock Springs, travel north three miles. Bear right onto Reliance Road, and then travel about 1.8 miles to Reliance. Bear right on South Street. Travel one block and turn right.
