Casper’s Sandbar District
The cafes, bars, small hotels and little houses of the Sandbar District in Casper, Wyo. were mostly razed in the mid-1970s in the urban renewal effort that built the new Casper City Hall and the Laurel Gardens public housing for the elderly. But the buildings along both sides of First Street between David and Ash—where the First Street Bakery and War Surplus Store are located—date to times before Prohibition.
Archival collections at the Casper College Western History Center, (307) 268-2680, and at the Fort Caspar Museum, (307) 235-8462, are rich in photographs of the Sandbar and may be seen on request.
