Johnson County War route
The drive north from Casper to Buffalo generally follows the route of the invaders in 1892. The site of the KC Ranch house, burned in April 1892 to roust out Nate Champion, lies just across the Middle Fork of Powder River from the Kaycee downtown area.
Following the Middle Fork upstream from Kaycee—southwest on Wyoming Highway 190—leads to the beautiful Hole-in-the-Wall country. Proceeding north from Kaycee on Wyoming Highway 196 takes a traveler past the T.A. Ranch, virtually unchanged from 1892, but not now open to the public. A few miles south of Buffalo, the highway also passes a historical marker at the site where John A. Tisdale was assassinated.
