Sheep Creek Cemetery
The Sheep Creek Cemetery is the only trace of African-American community of Empire, Wyo., left on the landscape. The cemetery served the Sheep Creek Presbyterian Church and contains several graves of Empire residents, including the graves of two unidentified African-American boys. The graves for the black homesteaders are located outside the cemetery proper, in a wheat field, separated from the other graves. The cemetery is in Nebraska, a mile east of the Wyoming state line. To reach the cemetery, head southeast from Torrington, Wyo. on US Route 20/26 for 8.5 miles, to the town of Henry, Neb. In Henry, turn left and drive north on Henry Road for seven miles to the cemetery.
